Hi Eileen, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share a little bit about me and what I do.

My name is Avril Gill I am the Founder of Newlands Personal Development  – (Hypnotherapy School) and a specialist in Personal Development and Personal Transformation.  Based in Edinburgh, although I work with individuals from all over the UK and Europe/America.

I am an author and a trainer of Hypnotherapy, Ericksonian & Generative Trance Hypnotherapist, and a Mind Coach. I work with individuals and groups, providing unique personal development workshops as well as coaching inspired by Hypnotherapy, NLP, energy healing and the great masters of personal change. I also teach a Certified Practitioner Diploma in Hypnotherapy, NLP & Coaching, accredited by the British Institute of Hypnotherapy & NLP

So can you tell me about what motivated you into this work, can you share part of your own personal story

I underwent a course of CBT therapy many years ago and found it very laborious and ineffective for me.  Not long after completing a counselling diploma I started facilitating a group that helped people who had experienced childhood sexual violence, the majority of the individuals in the group at the time were doing some form of CBT and all of those who attended the group reported similar experiences to me.

At the time I wasn’t trained in hypnotherapy or NLP. Intuitively I felt there must be a far more effective way of helping people to recover from these types of trauma, without the need to continually assess every thought or behaviour that one ever experiences. Or for individuals to constantly relive experiences to heal from them and I became extremely disillusioned and frustrated at how ineffective some of the support structures were for this type of work.

This experience combined with a few other rather disappointing experiences provided the basis for me to begin the process of reinventing my career and leaving Financial Services and to use my skills as a psychologist and coach to help people in a different way.

I had spent 20 years building a career in Coaching & HR Learning and Development and loved training and coaching; I just didn’t like doing it in the Financial Services industry. After a few years working in private practice with clients one to one I missed the buzz that training gave me, so I reignited my passion for training by applying what I loved doing to what I was doing now, using hypnotherapy, NLP & Coaching to help people change their lives. Thus my journey into teaching in the field of these transformational modalities began.

I am passionate about helping people transform and fundamentally believe that people have all the resources within them to constantly change who they are, all they need is the right support and guidance to help them get there.

So can you give me a little bit more information on your training, your experience

I have a long list of qualifications going back over 20 years in Coaching, initially starting my teaching career at a local college and becoming an SVQ tutor way back in 1995! That makes me feel old!

I have a BSc Honours Degree Psychology, and first qualified as a Hypnotherapist in 2004, I went on to train with a variety of Hypnotherapy & NLP schools gaining various coaching certificates and NLP Master Practitioner status in 2008 and in 2010 trained as a teacher in Hypnotherapy gaining a Master Trainers Certificate in Hypnotherapy. All my training in Hypnotherapy is accredited with the BIH & ABH. Supporting my hypnotherapy school.

I am also a Reiki Practitioner and an Energy Practitioner and trained with the Guild of Energists in 2011/12

I am also a mum of two girls, age 6 & age 25, so I know all about the demands of juggling a busy personal life while running your own business and managing a demanding career and I truly understand the need to create a healthy work life balance. My life experience underpins all that I do and that itself is way more valuable than any of the formal qualifications that I have.

If you had one piece of advice to give to our readers what would that be?

Focus on one area that you can be remarkable in, slow down and take your time as you will never get it all done anyway, and most importantly be just be you.

Align what you are passionate about with the work you do and focus on that and don’t worry about what others are doing or whether they are further ahead than you.
